Fight AIDS in Africa:

The world has
become a smaller place! Through the Fight AIDS in Africa,
YEP teens are establishing a peer education and communication
exchange over the internet with youth in Burkina Faso,
West Africa. |
Linked to an AIDS
education program funded by Pfizer, the exchange involves
YEP and West African teens telling each other about the many
sides of their lives in their respective neighborhoods, villages,
communities, and countries. YEP teens are including information
about their peer education and youth leadership models, and
Burkina Faso youth are exploring these models for possible
adaptation by the AIDS education and prevention program in
30 villages in their country.
About Us
 |
Year
One: During 2002-03, the project involved creating
and exchanging photo journals of life among teens in
the two countries. In Ann Arbor, we have also been learning
about the history and challenges of AIDS in Africa,
the issues AIDS poses in East and West Africa, and the
US, and the conditions of poverty and health care. |
Our goal is to be
able to conduct communication exchange with photos and stories
over the Internet. To do this, we need two sturdy laptops
(Dell Latitude preferred), and related technology and software.

Ann
Arbor teens involved in the Fight AIDS in Africa are
a very diverse group of kids from all parts of our community.
We are from all four public high schools and represent
many ethnic backgrounds. This winter SHARP
Corps kids at Tappan Middle School became involved
in the project as well. They created their own photo
journal about the community service projects they do.
|
In
spring of 2003, teens from Bryant
Community Center also joined the project and have
begun another photo journal to share with teens in Burkina
Faso. These will be very different than the snow photos
we sent this past winter! (Burkina Faso is a hot climate
culture with lots of sand and no snow!) Those of us
who are here this summer are planning social events,
skits and community discussion forums for summer and
fall to involve more teens in learning about AIDS in
the US and Africa. We believe that this exchange will
enrich and unite diverse parts of our own community
while also connecting both sides of the globe. We will
document our activities with photo journals to send
to Burkina Faso through the internet.

We teens in
Fight AIDS in Africa want more kids to join us to make
the peer education exchange project even more interesting
and exciting. It is a great opportunity for kids from
all parts of Ann Arbor to learn from each other as well
as about teen life in West Africa. We meet approximately
once a week for an hour and work on our exchange projects
in between those meetings. |
