Get Out the Vote!

What is Generation Vote?

We are a coalition of teens from youth organizations in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti working together to get out the vote among 18-29 year-olds. Even though we can't vote, we can still have a voice in our democratic proccess!

Did you know? (even by the most optimistic data available)...

  • Due to low voter turnout, no U.S. President has had enough votes to claim a majority of the actual U.S. population in nearly two decades.
  • In the 2000 Presidential election, while 70% of adults over 25 voted, only 42% of youth 18-24 voted.
  • 18-24 year-olds now represent 13% of the population, but only 8% of the vote.
  • In Michigan, the 18-24 voting rate in the 1998 election was only 21%, while the 25 and over rate was 60% (nearly three times as high).
  • In Michigan, in the 2000 election, the voting rate for people 25 and over was tied for 10th in the nation, while the rate for 18-24 year-olds was tied for 20th.
  • High school graduates vote at nearly twice the rate of high school dropouts, and college graduates vote at three times the rate of high school dropouts.
  • The voter turnout rate is consistently 21-49% lower for youth 18-24 years old than adults 25 and older for all elections in all states, and has been since the voting age was made 18 in 1972.
  • In all age groups, voting rates are as much as 20% lower in the midterm elections than in Presidential elections, and despite the gap, the adult turnout for midterm elections is still higher than the youth turnout in Presidential elections.
