COMMUNITY-BASED PARTNERSHIPS during 2002-03
A key aspect of
the Youth Empowerment Project’s infrastructure is its
ongoing partnerships with community nonprofit and civic institutions.
These partnerships provide intergenerational opportunities
for young people and adults to work together on issues that
affect the community and its citizens of all ages and backgrounds.
YEP teens learn first hand the values of community service
and civic participation and skills that will serve them well
for life. At the same time, the partnering organizations benefit
from the fresh and unique perspectives that only youth can
bring to the table. The community gains in the short-term
through the services the youth provide, and in the long term
from the future roles these youth will undoubtedly play as
engaged and productive adults.

On Board (YOB) program. Over 70 teens have been
trained and placed on non-profit boards since 1999. Each teen
has worked along side an adult board mentor with whom they

- Huron, Pioneer, Community, Roberto Clemente High Schools
(with the Youth Senate)

for the Yellow Pages)
- Neutral Zone Teen Center (Co-Sponsoring Teen Night at
Top of the Park, Summer 2002)
- The New Center (reduced rental rates)
- PIRGIM (Ann Arbor) & Youth Vote Coalition (national)
(technical assistance with voter registration clinics and
‘Get out the Vote’ campaigns)
- Tappan Middle School (with YEP program SHARP Corps.)
Additional
Partners: The Ann Arbor Youth Senate benefits from
guidance provided by 13 members of the Senate’s
Adult Advisory Council. These advisors include 3 City
Council Members and a City employee, 2 School Board Members
and a high school principal, CEO of the local community foundation,
and directors of a number of local youth serving nonprofit
agencies.

YEP Partner by:
1. Joining Youth
On Board (YOB) by Signing on to accept one or
more teens ages 16 to 18 as voting members of your non-profit
Board of Directors and committees. We will train and refer
teen candidates to you to interview and select for serving
