Youth On Board

The Youth Empowerment Project

. . . . with the Power of Youth Success is Inevitable!

Teens offer a perspective that is often lost in the adult world. With our limited experience, a task is never completed on ‘automatic pilot’.

- Raphaëlle Monty, Student Advocacy Center Board Member, Huron High School, 2003

WHAT IS “YOUTH ON BOARD” (YOB)?

YEP’s Youth on Board program trains and places teens ages 16 to 18 in voting seats on nonprofit organization (NPO) boards and advisory committees. Some advisory seats are also available for teens under 16 years of age. Since 1999, YEP has placed over 70 teens on the boards or advisory committees of 16 NPOs and public institutions. YOB is committed to making this exchange equally beneficial for youths and the NPO boards.

Teens from the YEP Leadership Team conduct Basic Leadership Training twice a year (fall and spring) for all youth interested in the YOB program. The Lead Team also plans monthly Advanced Leadership Training sessions that further develop leadership skills for teens already serving on a board or in a community leadership position (such as with the Senate). To optimize mutual success, key members of the board on which the youth(s) will serve are required to attend a short, informative orientation that aims to maximize their success with YOB. Most often, two teens serve on a board at a time. Teens serving on a board are assigned an adult mentor from the board. Both youth and adult participants in the program attest to the impact it has had on them.

Teens provide enthusiasm and questions which help us better articulate and explore ideas.

Through YOB, YEP is pleased to work with many diverse and interesting NPOs. Some of the Partner organizations participating in YOB during 2003 are:

Being on a board is a fantastic way to tackle issues relevant in the real world.
